As soon as I saw this idea, and I could break out of the late night PTA meeting, I did not pass go, I did not collect 200 dollars. I found three white plates at the Thrift Store (the dollar store also sells white plates, but they were cheaper at the thrift store, go figure!).
I also grabbed a porcelaine pen at Michael's (you can order these online, the link to these plates (above) provides that info). You can use these to write on dishes, bake it in and make it permanant. I can't lie, I'm now determined to go decorate all the dishes in my cabinet, and I'm not sayin' it won't happen. I printed off this blank face picture from Amazon.
There is apparently a transfer paper you can use, but I did my transfer old school. I used a pencil on the back to color along the major lines.
I then placed it where I wanted it along the plate, and went over the lines on the 'right side' with my pencil.
This presses the pencil marking onto the plate in whatever pattern you draw.I was surprised at how well this worked on the plate.
I traced over this with the porcelaine pen.
The site I snagged this precious idea from even personalized the plates with names. I can't decide who will be getting these, so....I dried, baked, and continue to be in love with this idea. I'm a testament to the fact that parents will always need to say, "Don't play with your food." Mine still would if she thought it would do any good. It won't.
Genius!!!

ReplyDeletethat's fantastic! love it!
ReplyDeletethis is brilliant! you are an inspired momma :)
ReplyDeletegreat idea! Do you think this could be done with melamie plates for my 2 year old? If so, what kind of pen would you recommend?
ReplyDelete@Charity-I'm not sure about that material. This particular markers requires 'baking' so it sets, but you could use a plastic, clear plate, and a permanant marker on the bottom side (just to make sure it's 'safe for eating). That would be my best guest for a little kiddo-proof plate. :O)
ReplyDeleteOh super fun, I bet ER would love this and I'm with you it's a cute idea but the premade plates were too expensive. Where in Michael's did you find that pen, what was it near? And you said you printed out the face from Amazon, was it from the plate product listing? Can you tell I plan to make one...or a set?
