Hot chocolate...is there really any reason to convince someone it's good to know how to make your own? I found this recipe via Alton Brown, and it makes a lot, so I was able to package this up in several fun ways to add to gifts for friends.
I was also able to reserve enough for me and the piles of Whipped Cream, and crushed Andes mints my hot chocolate requires.
Ingredients:
2 c. powdered sugar, 1 c. cocoa, 2 1/2 c. powdered milk, 1 t. salt, 2 t. cornstarch (it also called for a pinch of cayenne pepper, but I was too scared, and skipped this step).
Mix it up with a wisk, and store in an airtight container. When you are ready to drink, make a c. with 1/2 mix and 1/2 warm water or milk.
There is Nothing better than homemade hot chocolate!! Perfect for our chilly days and evenings!!! Thanks for sharing the recipe...I haven't actually made any in years!!! I should do this...I have hot chocolate loving princess in my house.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I shall be making this for my friend as the shop bought stuff makes her unwell.
ReplyDeleteHi! I found your cute hot chocolate/marshmallow snowman idea on Pinterest. Don't be afraid about the dash of cayenne. You will never taste it and it helps open up your tastebuds so that you will taste the hot chocolate better. My dad is a food scientist and added it to A LOT of food growing up (like, almost everything I remember!), you really won't taste it, as long as you keep it to just a dash. :-)
ReplyDeleteGood to know, I have always skipped the cayenne as well because I was afraid. I will try it next time! Thanks

Deleteif you add a cinnamon stick and cloves about 2 to 1 liter of milk or water will give you a good taste .... also if you add evaporated milk hopefully you like

ReplyDeleteHow long does the mix stay good?
ReplyDeleteIt should be good AT LEAST six months. I'd look at the box of your dry milk and other ingred. Basically-when they all expire is when your mix would expire since there is nothing fresh inside! I've kept mine for a year plus and it's perfectly fine!
ReplyDeleteWhen making this then, it's a 1-1 ratio? Like 1/2c. mix + 1/2c. water?
ReplyDeleteYes, it's 1/1, but if you like your chocolate a little less sweet, you can always cut back a little. :O) Or add more if you REALLY like chocolate!
ReplyDeleteIs is 1 tsp or tbs for the salt and 2 tsp or tbs for the cornstarch? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTypically a lowercase t means tsp. and uppercase T means tbs.
DeleteI am so happy not only to find your recipe but to see you USE the t-tea T-table like the old Betty Crocker Recipe Book taught me. I get aggravated to see everybody just make up there own way to write or convert this. I was taught the old way of t or T (I'm only 42) and then you didn't have to write out the word out, saves time. LOL Kids these days...
DeleteWhere can you buy powdered milk??

Any grocery store should sell it. It might be aroudn the hot chocolate packets/coffee (near creamers) OR you might find it on the baking aisle. It comes in a box-about the size of pancake mix. :O)
ReplyDeletet.=teaspoon :)
ReplyDeleteUse Stevia in place of sugar for a sugar-free drink. Stevia is great for this type of thing & it's way better if you're trying to watch your waist line. ;0)
ReplyDeleteIt's generally 3X sweeter than sugar so you don't need much. Start with 1/4 cup of the white powder stevia and adjust it from there.

Just made it with additional ingredients - 2 tsp of cinnamon, 2 tsp of chili powder and fresh ground nutmeg....its to die for...so thank you
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the tip! Can't wait to try it out! So glad it worked out well :)
ReplyDeleteA tiny bit of cayenne pepper acts like natural MSG. Just a little bit of it wakes up taste buds and enhances other flavors.
ReplyDeleteSuch a delicate thing to make for get-togethers.

I'm Tonia Anderson by name, I am from the States, Suffolk county to be precise. I am here today to testify of the good works LORD ZAKUZA has done in my life, I never knew great men still exist until I found him. I have been suffering from heart break for the past 3 years, my partner who I invested on cheated on me with my best friend on my matrimonial bed, I was yet to recover from this terrible shock until I meant LORD ZAKUZA, a friend of mine directed me to him , I doubted him at first but as things went further, I had to give him my trust and did exactly as he told me to do. Ever since then, I have been happy all my life and my love life with my partner has been so wonderful. You can also need his help and here's his contact information. ReplyDeleteHello everyone, I have lost money to so many companies that have claimed to be real lenders, but all my efforts have been in vain, I have lost more than 3500 euros to fake lenders to whom claim to be what they are not. Until my friend introduced me to the right lender I contacted and I successfully obtained a loan from them in just 48 hours, I would recommend anyone looking for a loan without fear to contact them by email:lapofunding960@gmail.com
