A friend of mine asked me to make a spirit dress for her. These have been popping up all over college campuses and sports games. You can make them with just an oversized tshirt, but she asked me to add some fabric to the bottom to add some length. Basically, but an oversize tshirt...
Cut off the sleeves (leave about a quarter inch more than the rest of the shirt to fold in and sew so it's even with the rest of the shirt).Cut of the top (so it's an even line)...
Sew a seam down the sleeve so it's one continues line with the original sides.
Fold under the neck and sew this around as well, leaving a hole for elastic.
Measure and then thread the elastic through....
Sew the elastic....
You could be 'done' here and wear it....I pinned it where I was going to slice it off and then add fabric. It's important at this step that you take a picture on your camera that you need to rotate before loading, but are too lazy to rotate, so you load it sideways and decide mediocre is good enough for this blog post...
Sew another seam up to thread a second piece of elastic.
There are some people that might be 'done' here as well....just sayin'...
I took double the amount of fabric that it took to go around my friend and then trimmed one end (that would be the bottom), and then sewed the two ends together to create one big loop.
I ghetto ruffled and pinned it to the bottom of the halter top so it was cinched in places....
Lots o' pins....
I sewed these two piece together, but stretched out the elastic (or tried not to catch it in the thread) as I went around.
Ta Da....
Ta da...the back. I was going to add a ribbon to the waist, but then I remembered I was going for mediocre and I thought a ribbon might be too close to the borderline of not mediocre anymore....and I really don't want to have to go rotate that picture too....
Do you have an etsy shop? I'd love to have one of these dresses!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I want a baylor one!!
ReplyDeleteI don't have an etsy shop...I usually make people come over, measure them. Sew. Measure again. It's a thought though! I'm just scared of the criticism. :O) I would think you could find someone though, maybe look up "spirit dress". Hope that helps!
