Yarn Rainbow

Tuesday, May 28, 2019 No comments
I'm headed to GMT Thursday with some summer crafts.  I'll post the video later on facebook, but in the meantime here is one of the projects I'm bringing.  I've seen these little yarn rainbows popping up all over the net, and I decided to try a version using my own technique.
I had a bunch of left over yarn from another project I'll post about soon (when I'm finished).  I actually bought these little bolts at a thrift store for cents, and they are all different fun textures.  I bought some thick rope at Michaels (and used a coupon, of course).  I cut each piece a little larger so it made the traditional arch, but I used non-traditional colors because....art.
I just wrapped the yarn around the rope, and secured each end by tying it together, and then used a hot glue gun to press the 'bows' together.
I made two little pom poms (I wrapped yarn around my fingers 20 times and tied it in the middle, then snipped in the loops) to act as clouds.  If I made a larger rainbow, I would have done tassels, but I'm going to squeeze this and 2 other crafts into a 4 minute segment, so I'm going mini!

Unicorn Pocket Letter

Thursday, December 06, 2018 1 comment
Pocket letters were really big a few years ago.  People got pretty elaborate with their pocket scenes.  The idea is you use those old baseball card sleeves and fill them with scrapbook supplies.  Some people even fill the front and back.  Then you fold them up and can slip them in a letter size envelope.  I did NOT go elaborate because my goal was to get this out in a speedy fashion.  My cousin's little gal is at a really fun age, and she is a fan of the unicorn.  I too love a good unicorn decoration.  She came to my house over the break and we did some crafting (another one of her loves) and she enjoyed playing with all my supplies, and examining all my unicorns.
So....I went through my old scraps, pulled out washi, and stickers etc, and I filled a little envelope full of these gals for her to get creative.  This concludes with her next love-letters, so....mine is closed up, stickered up, and I'm adding some tape and a couple of stamps and then shipping this through the mail.

Unicorn Album

This year is all about picture albums.  I'm alarmed by the number of friends that don't print pictures, so I'm hoping if I give them albums already ready to fill they will print a few.  One of my friends loves unicorns (as do I), so I used a paper pack from a line they have at Michael's and some of the stickers and flowers hanging near the line to make this little folio album.
My thought is she can print thumbnail size pictures, or cut down the regulard and fill these pages.  I did a quick walk through here to show all the details.  They are a pretty quick gift ideas.....and this makes four of these little guys.  Below is the video walk through.

Mini Unicorn Pinata

Friday, July 22, 2016 No comments
I made my own mini donkey pinata a few years ago to fill with a gift card to a local Mexican restaurant.  Here are those instructions.  Recently I saw a unicorn pinata online, and it was my intention to make another pinata....the unicorn version, but then I ran across some mini donkey shapes already put together at Hobby Lobby.
I used a coupon and picked up a three pack.  They also sold the fringe (this is not an ad-seriously, I just hate trying to search down products), but I just bought some tissue at the dollar store.
I cut the tissue into strips.
I glued strips down the main, overlapping them a little bit.
I just used regular old glue stick.
I did the same thing with the tail, but instead of having it go to the side like the main, I had it go towards the back.
Here's a look at the finished main.  It doesn't have to be perfect b/c you are going to go over it with the white.
The tail is also where the opening was.
I slipped the gift inside.
I then took white tissue and I covered the body with fringe.
I took a gold piece of scrapbook paper and glued it into the shape of a cone.
I glued a little strip in the cone, and used that surface to glue it onto the head of the unicorn.
I have two more of these guys....I think I'm going pastel with the next one, and then....who knows, the sky is the limit.

Pet Unicorn

One of my friends and I spend a lot of time talking about unicorns.  It's a joke...sort of.  With that in mind, I like to randomly send stuff through the mail just as a surprise.  I love packages, and so a surprise package would be the ultimate gift for me, so....I give what I want to get.  I have these little duck unicorns I bought from Oriental Trading awhile back.  I also had these little white boxes I was going to use to mail shower invites, but time wasn't my friend, so....they are sitting in my house waiting for a purpose.
I put the unicorn's care instructions inside the box.  It turns out unicorns sometimes needs additional horns (sold at Party City), they eat skittles (ironically, a well loved treat my friend and I share).  They need to be told fairy tales at bedtime, and they like to listen to music in the morning-in particular, 90's boy bands.
I put all the essential pieces for caring for a unicorn and sent it on it's way because-who doesn't want to received a magic pet unicorn through the mail?

Unicorn Pooh Cookies

I recently saw these cookies on Erin's Blog....uhh....if these didn't have my name all over them, I don't know what cookie does?!?!?  Erin and I both seem to have a similar since of humor, so it made me happy to find another idea to try out.  I made these for some teachers at my school who were administering the state test recently.  I mean, really, is there an age that unicorn pooh isn't the perfect gift for stressed out friends.  The cookies are pretty large b/c of the twisting, so it only makes 9-10 per batch.
Unicorn Pooh Recipe
1/2 c. butter (softened), 1/4 c. shortening, 1 c. sugar, 2 eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 1/2 c. flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. salt, food coloring, sparkle gel, star sprinkles, colored dragees
Instructions:  In a bowl, cream butter, shortening, and  sugar. Add eggs, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt.
Bake at 400 for 8 minutes.

Divide up and color the dough.  I used the neon coloring kit, plus yellow (same as Erin).
You chill it for at least an hour, it's a soft dough, but forgiving.  I rolled out thin 'worms' of dough.'  I just took about a golf ball size piece of each color.
 Twist, and mound up.
While the cookies are baking, having the sprinkles ready b/c you will want to press them into the cookies as soon as they come out while they are soft enough to break through the top crust.
 Here they are baked up.
 Press in sprinkles.
Ice using the gel (you could make a powdered sugar/water glaze as well and add course sugar to make these a little sweeter).
As Erin mentioned, the icing doesn't harden, but I was still able to bag them up for delivery
...and yet, nobody I know that received these seemed surprised to find these in their boxes.  What does this say about me I wonder......but I won't wonder that long.
