Vintage French Bathroom

Monday, March 30, 2020 No comments
It's fair to say, it's been a weird, scary, and tiring last few weeks.  In the midst of all the quarantines, I was able to finish up my bathroom redo (with the exception of organizing some of my drawers b/c I lack a few supplies and most stores are currently closed).  I wanted to do a (sort of) vintage French theme for my bathroom.  I wanted whites (b/c I can change it to anything very easily in the future) with cream walls (my favorite).  I also wanted to get this completed before I turned 40....at least I managed to beat 41.  I have 3 more things on that list, and I'm not giving up despite the deadline.  In this case, I was trying to be financially responsible.
I've shared a few things already, like this little sign that is a page I framed from an old French dictionary.  The word was 'swimming'-complete with pictures on how to save someone from drowning.
And I love this 5 gallon pickling jar I'm using to store towels and rest books and magazines.
I also found a box of old French phrase cards from high school.  This is probably the first time I've ever used them.  I sandwiched them into a frame from Target.  I did have to use double sided tape on the reverse side to keep them in place.
When you first enter the bathroom I have a wall of just some fun antiques I've been collecting.  Several are pages from old fashion magazines.  I also found (and framed) fabric samples written in French.  I have also just collected some fun little jars and containers that don't have a lot of purpose.  I'm TRYING to be better about making things functional, but....what function would an entrance wall really hold?
 Some closer views.
Over the sink, one thing I left from my old bathroom were jars of ducks.  I had a lot of blue and white and silver, but I just loved them too much to let them go.  I also have a big jar of vintage buttons I just thought were fun.
I have also become obsessed with mirrors.  I have a collection in my room now too in creams and golds, but....black were for the bathroom.  I've been collecting these for a couple of years.
I also found this two tiered basket at Sur La Table that works great for housing a lot of the necessities without taking up much space.
I love the old shaving mirror.  It's not functional, but instead of using the mirror that came with this vanity, I decided I wanted to keep my old mirror and it was a little off center, so this helps make that less obvious.
I also found the cutest bath math from Anthropologie in French.
As soon as I laid it down, I realized it was going to (more likely) end up being a dog bed.
I love this old tin piece.
I also found an old bedside table to sit next to the bathtub with bath salts etc.
I had this old window in my bathroom, but to stick with the theme, I added some vinyl to make it look like an old shop window.  I also embroidered some towels.
I also had someone from Etsy sew me some shower curtains in black and white striped fabric.
I bought a little spoon on Etsy as well I had someone stamp "Bath Salt" in French as well.
So, with our current normal, I guess this is where I'll be going to seek a little relaxation and to 'get away.'

Bathroom Redo in the Works....Still

Wednesday, August 07, 2019 1 comment
It has been a really busy summer.  I had so many house projects I was going to do and I did none of them.  I went back to work full time today and I'm feeling really overwhelmed by this fact.  One thing I thought was going to be finished last spring was my bathroom remodel.  The sink I wanted (the only one I wanted) was back ordered for over 6 months on Wayfair, and I couldn't begin b/c it sits up off the floor, which means I needed to wait to do tiles (my current sink is on the floor).  Then the floor waits on the tub, the tub on the tile etc.  The sink finally came in, but then I had visitors headed to the house.  So, it all still sits in waiting in my garage or my closet.  To keep my sanity, I've put a few new things into the bathroom so I didn't feel quite so stunted.  One thing I love is the old crock I found at an antique store I'm using to house towels.  I used to have a stand that held them, but I'm replacing that with something else, so this is my new solution.  I bought a new shower curtain on Etsy.
I've already shared some of the pictures I bought/made (the above natatorium page from an old French dictionary), the below sign I made with my cricut and an old window that was currently in my bathroom.
...and these old French phrase cards I sandwiched in a frame from Target.
As soon as my guest head back home I'm going to contact a guy I've used for past projects, and I'm going to get a quote.  I'm trying to convince myself I can install my own tile floor, but after watching a bunch of youtube videos I might be lying to myself, but I'll decide if it's worth the therapy based on the quote I get.  Above all, I don't want debt, but I do want to remodel this bathroom.  Stay tuned.  Here's hoping I have more updates soon!

Hanging Hand Mirrors

I'll get better pictures soon, but here's a little bathroom update.  I'm still waiting to purchase the bigger things (sink, floors, tub).  It's really hard to be responsible.  I've found a lot of the decorations though, including a small collection of hand mirrors.  It's really tempting to go buy a couple more, but I'm trying to give myself room to grow.
I wanted to hang these mirrors without doing any damage, and I decided to use the smallest plate hangers I could find which seem to be working perfect.
One mirror fit snug and hung without any rigging.

BUT, this mirror was too small and the springs made it sort of flop a little from the wall (very technical terms, I know).  SO, I tied up the springs into place at the bottom using dental floss.  (Sticking with the theme there).  And it worked perfect.

Faux Vintage French Window

One of my goals this year is to redo my guest bathroom. It needed redoing 17 years ago when I moved in to this house.  The problem is, I have a few things I need to do in my life that will drain some money advance of this project (which will include sink/bathroom/floors/light fixtures).  So, right now, I'm working on the things I CAN DO that don't cost a lot of money until I either A)  Find a money tree.  B)  Win the lottery (which also includes B 1/2) Start playing the lottery C)  Get those other things 'done.'  So, I already had this window in the bathroom hanging with a wreath in the middle.  The wreath may get another purpose b/c I like it.
I designed a 'vintage' perfume shop sign using some I saw on Cricut and I used this tutorial on youtube for making it a 20 by 20 so it would fill up the space on the window.  Pause for a silent moment for youtube making life so much easier.
My design ended up in four parts.  I'm not a perfectionist, so I used a ruler to roughly measure where this would be center, and thus, where to begin the design.
Then I pieced together the four pieces of matted black and pressed them down to the window.
I'm so eager to get moving on this project, but this at least makes me feel like I am moving forward!  I'm currently storing all the 'new' pieces in my closet, so it gives me double incentive to get moving!  BUT I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Vintage French Phrase Frame

One of my goals is to redo my guest bath sometime over the next year.  Hopefully sooner, but I'll let my pocket book determine that.  I have been collecting a few things here and there.  I saw this frame at Target and I fell in love.  I was looking for a vintage print, but it's a bizarre shape....so I googled vintage paperwork and these old French/English phrase cards popped up on Etsy.
I used some double sided tape to float them in the frame.  This meets my French standards and my quirky standards.  Win.
